My Guide to Good

“For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.” – Psalm 48:14

God will lead us on the path He’s marked out for us. He will direct our steps toward Him. He will carry us away from our Egypts, from the things that enslave us and weigh us down.

He’s a good God. And He’s a good guide.

Even when the journey is unexpected, when the lows seem to outweigh the highs, when the prayers outnumber the praises.

“I can’t see where my Dance Partner is going, but if I can trust enough to follow, I’ll get there by exercising the strength of submission.” – Dr. Alicia Britt Chole, 40 Days of Decrease

I’m strengthening my trust muscle in this season. I’m learning to let go and follow His lead, believing that His ways are best.

He knows where He’s taking us. He alone knows how to get there. He knows the path; He’s traveled it before. He knows every twist and turn, every mountain and valley.

“You will make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” – Psalm 16:11

God is a good guide. He makes the path of life known to us, even if it’s just the next step. Even if it’s just being present in His presence. He will show us the way. He’s our source, the One who fills and gives and provides.

“Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.” – Psalm 43:3

Sometimes He leads us through the darkness, through the valley of the shadow of death. But His word is always a lamp unto our feet. His truth illuminates the path. Jesus is the way.

We must surrender our pride. Our plan a’s and plan b’s. Our way. Our limited picture of how we see our days on this earth unfolding. We must put our hope and trust in God, our good guide. We need to trust that He sees the complete picture, start to finish, and He knows how the pieces fit together best.

“Trusting God requires us to place our dependence on Him. And the pathway that leads us away from pride and into a place of truly trusting God is paved with humility.” – Lysa TerKeurst, Embraced

God can take whatever circumstances we’re facing, whatever hardship and trouble, whatever pain and struggle, and turn it for His glory. He creates beauty from ashes. He rights all wrongs. He takes that which was intended for evil and He makes it good.

It’s comforting to know that He’s not surprised by the trials we face. There’s nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). And He understands. Jesus came to earth to be near, to be with us – fully God, fully human.

We’re not alone on this pilgrimage to heaven. We have Holy Spirit, God’s word, and the Church.

“Lead me, O lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies, make straight your way before me.” – Psalm 5:8

He sees it all and knows it all. The whole story, the smallest of details – every part of it. He sees and knows my beginning, middle, and end. And He’s there, ready to lead, graciously guiding.

I want to follow His lead. Not my way but His. Not my will but His. He is trustworthy; He will make the path level, smooth, right, even – He will make it good.

I believe this leg of the journey, this wilderness season, this great unknown is preparation – for the future and the present, redeeming the past. I don’t want to miss it. I don’t want to rush past the important growth in the unseen. It’s okay to slow down. To practice yielding.

The waiting isn’t easy, but it’s also not a waste. God is always up to good. Help is on the way. Breakthrough is coming. He’s our guide on the path to Himself.

God is my one true guide. The one who goes before, who stands beside, who has my back. Who holds my hand, my world, and me. The one who leads for my benefit, who’s in it with me. The one who never gives up. The one who is always God, seated on the throne. Just. Victorious. Faithful.

My guide to Good, He’s leading me to Himself.
