Welcome to 2020! I hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and start off your year with some encouragement and motivation.
One of my favorite traditions of entering a new year is choosing a #oneword. Margaret Feinberg introduced the idea to me, and it’s been an amazing journey the last few years. From Breathe to Held, from Bloom to Savor, I love seeing how God ties my year together with one little word.
I struggled a bit in narrowing down my word. First of all, I love words; there are so many good ones out there! Also, I wanted to make sure it was the right word. Ultimately it’s a process of faith, listening and trusting and walking faithfully with God.
I looked at my list of potential words. Unhurried has really been on my heart lately. Then I found an old note on my phone…
Sometimes my race looks like sitting at His feet. Sometimes my running after Him looks like stillness.
Presence is the key to the journey.
Make space for it. Clear out the calendar. Move aside soul clutter.
“What you want your team (or kids) to model, you must first live” … i.e. not being in a hurry or rushed. Slow down. Jesus wasn’t hurried. He took His time.
“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” – Dallas Willard
Does my life shout hurry up or does it whisper slow down?
Enjoy my family.
Savor.
This word at the end – savor – caught my attention. I quickly looked up the definition and knew this was the one. My theme for 2020.
- To give flavor to : season
- To have experience of : taste; to taste or smell with pleasure : relish; to delight in : enjoy
“O taste and see that the LORD is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” – Psalm 34:8 (NASB)
“Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see – how good GOD is. Blessed are you who run to Him.” – Psalm 34:8 (MSG)
For me, savor is an invitation to intentionality… to be present in His presence… to experience and enjoy… to taste and see… to remove “hurry” from my vocabulary and to rest in Him. To learn what it means to savor in every relationship, in every way. From work to play, from food to fun, from chores to trials, and everything in-between.
I’m only two days in, but I’m already in awe of how God is weaving things together with savor. From books on my shelf, to notes in my journal, to gifts I received for Christmas. I can’t wait to see what else He has in store.
I’m looking ahead with anticipation and awareness. I’m excited for this next leg of my journey. From Selah to Sabbath, from daily bread to living water, from rhythms of grace to an unhurried pace.
Here’s to an incredible year, full of potential and promise, a season of learning to savor.

I would love to know what your #oneword is so I can pray and partner with you in it! Comment below! If you need help, check out this free guide from Margaret!
