I thought I had learned my lesson about the shadows.
After all, I wrote a blog about it. 😉
“Don’t mistake this darkness for something other than His shadow. It’s not separation. You are under His wings.”
Trouble and trials remind us to take refuge in the shadow of His wings.
“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in You my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings until the disaster has passed.” – Psalm 57:1
“How priceless is Your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” – Psalm 36:7
In the shadows, it’s quiet. We rest and we lean into Him. We fix our eyes on Him and let His Word light our path. His unexplainable peace guards our hearts and minds.
In the shadows, He’s closer than we think. We’re covered and protected.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty… He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” – Psalm 91:1, 4
“Show me the wonder of Your great love, You who save by Your right hand those who take refuge in You from their foes. Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings.” – Psalm 17:7-8
God is our refuge; the word in the Hebrew is chacah (H2620). It means “to flee for protection; figuratively, to confide in; to take refuge, to flee some where for refuge, as under the shadow of the wings of God, hence to trust in some one, especially in God.”
Recently I was reading in Psalms, and I came across another option when we find ourselves in the shadows.
We can sing.
“Because You are my help, I sing in the shadow of Your wings.” – Psalm 63:7
So, I’m revisiting the shadows. And I’m learning to sing here.
“God needs nothing, asks nothing, and demands nothing, like the stars. It is life with God which demands these things… You do not have to sit outside in the dark. If, however, you want to look at the stars, you will find the darkness necessary. But the stars neither require nor demand it.” – Annie Dillard
Sometimes the darkness is necessary. Sometimes there’s a song swelling up inside of us, and the darkness helps to bring it out. Not the evil kind of darkness, but the kind of darkness that helps us focus in on Him and His ever-shining light.
He is our Help, and He is worthy of our song. In every season, in every circumstance, in every shadow.
